Mission

The mission of the Nebraska Department of Justice Victim Assistance Program is to mitigate the impact of crime on the lives of victims by enhancing victim services statewide, promoting victims' rights, and providing access to information and resources in a compassionate and dedicated manner.

Purpose

The Victim Assistance Program provides information, referrals, assistance, and personal and criminal justice related advocacy to victims of crime across the State of Nebraska who have suffered physical, sexual, financial, or emotional harm as a result of the commission of a violent crime.

If you need assistance relating to protection orders or other issues, advocates are able to assist statewide.

 

The Nebraska Alliance of Child Advocacy Centers offer an innovative way of serving abused children through a comprehensive approach to services for victims and their families which include forensic interviewing, medical evaluations, advocacy and support, therapeutic intervention, case review and tracking. Nebraska's seven Child Advocacy Centers (CAC) seek to provide a culturally competent, multi-disciplinary response to allegations of child abuse in a dedicated, child-friendly setting.

The Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence is a statewide advocacy organization committed to the prevention and elimination of sexual and domestic violence. They work to enhance safety and justice for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault by supporting and building upon the services provided by the network of local programs.

If you need to make a report to law enforcement about a crime that has occurred to you, please call law enforcement who responds to the location of where the crime happened. If you are unsure of an exact location or the crime occurred in multiple locations, the Nebraska State Patrol can assist by calling the troop area about where the crime occurred.

Nebraska’s automated service allows you to check the status of an offender’s custody, within Nebraska and register for notifications via text and/or email. NEVCAP is a free & confidential service.

 

Notification events:

 

  • Placement in a Community Corrections Center 
  • Escape from Custody / Return to Custody
  • Parole Hearings, Release to Parole, Revocation of Parole
  • Discharge or other Release
  • Death of the Offender During Incarceration

Victim Rights

 

Those who become victims of crimes or witnesses to crimes have rights outlined in Nebraska Statute. For more information, refer to Nebraska Revised Statute 81-1848.

Those who experience sexual violence have rights given to them in Nebraska Statute. For more information, refer to the Nebraska Sexual Assault Victim Bill of Rights.

Offender Registry, Parole & Dept. of Corrections

The Nebraska State Patrol is the agency responsible for maintaining the State sex offender registry. For more information about the registry, registration, and reporting requirements visit the Nebraska State Patrol’s website at https://sor.nebraska.gov/.

Parole is a privilege granted to an offender that allows them to serve out a portion of his or her court-imposed sentence under the supervision of a Parole Officer in the community. In Nebraska, the Board of Parole is the body responsible for determining whether or not an offender is suitable for supervised release. Parole hearings are open to the public; anyone wishing to attend on behalf of, or in opposition to, an offender’s release on parole is welcome to attend.

Nebraska Department of Correctional Services

NDCS offers a Victim/Witness notification program for victims and witnesses of crime, as well as to family members and concerned citizens. NDCS can provide you with information regarding an incarcerated person serving their sentence when the following events occur:

  • Placement in a Community Corrections Center
  • For Furloughs Lasting 24 hrs or More (Only at Community Corrections Centers)
  • Death of the Offender During Incarceration
  • Escape From Custody/Return to Custody
  • Parole Hearings, Release to Parole, Revocation of Parole
  • Discharge or Other Release
