The low rates of prosecution in the past were likely due to the fact that the penalties were originally quite low so there was less focus on trafficking. But with the new penalties and the task force formation, there has been an increase in prosecutions per year.
There have been convictions of human trafficking under our state law. These numbers do not include the times a trafficker pleaded to a lesser charge in lieu of trial or the many human trafficking cases in Nebraska that have gone federal, prosecuted under national, not state, law.
