Human trafficking thrives in the shadows, even in Nebraska, because we don't see it. These videos illustrate different ways trafficking happens and how you can detect it.
What Is Labor Trafficking?
What Is Sex Trafficking?
Does It Happen in Nebraska?
What is labor trafficking?
Labor trafficking happens when someone attempts to force another to work, through lying about the job, physical force, or even non-physical coercion if sufficiently compelling.
What is sex trafficking?
Sex trafficking involves a sex act that is commercial (bought and sold) and taken without consent – through fraud, force, or non-physical coercion – or taken from someone under 18.
Does it happen in Nebraska?
Yes. Sex and labor trafficking happen regularly in Nebraska and not just in the big cities, but across the state. Our office has compiled an account for every city or town in which we have had at least a preliminary investigation of labor or sex trafficking since 2016 and they cover almost every corner of state.
Have Traffickers Been Prosecuted in Nebraska?
What Do Traffickers Look Like?
What Do Human Trafficking Victims Look Like?
Have traffickers been prosecuted in Nebraska?
The low rates of prosecution in the past were likely due to the fact that the penalties were originally quite low so there was less focus on trafficking. But with the new penalties and the task force formation, there has been an increase in prosecutions per year.
There have been convictions of human trafficking under our state law. These numbers do not include the times a trafficker pleaded to a lesser charge in lieu of trial or the many human trafficking cases in Nebraska that have gone federal, prosecuted under national, not state, law.
What do traffickers look like?
There is no one physical characteristic profile of a typical trafficker. What they do have in common, however, is a skill at manipulating the vulnerable, of exploiting a power over another person’s weakness to control them. This power disparity, and not whether they are male or female, young or old, scary or friendly, is the key.
What do human trafficking victims look like?
Human trafficking victims often have vulnerabilities that traffickers target. Some traffickers target the young, exploiting an age difference. Most victims have had other trauma in their lives; traffickers are somehow able to detect and then manipulate that. Forced labor victims are often foreign nationals; anxiety over their immigration status is leveraged to control them. Many state-involved children, those in foster care or the juvenile justice system, become victims.
